Summer Travels Again

Well it has happened again, you’ve wasted another perfectly good hour listening to Car Talk…oh wait no that isn’t what has happened.

Let’s start again. It has happened again and I’ve taken off to work in Italy for two months on some archaeological sites. This will be year number 10 for me. I can’t believe that it was even possible to do this for 10 summers. Sure I have missed 10 of my little sister’s birthdays and 10 Forth of Julys and 10 seasons of white water kayaking, but then again I’ve had 10 summers of gelato, 10 summers of touching ancient artifacts, and 10 summers of visiting places that I get to teach about. It is a weird way to recharge after a full year of teaching, you know working 40 hour weeks in the middle of an Italian summer and sleeping on beds that are older than me but so far it has worked (and they do say I will get a chance to sleep when I’m dead right?).

This year I will be returning to the excavations at Cosa run by FSU. (they keep a blog here, which I will be writing a post or 2 for). Then I will return to where it all started, the Poggio Civitate Archaeoligical project. I’ll have a group of students with me for 2 and ½ weeks (their blog posts will be here) and then I’ll finish out the season there. I will be posting at least once a week about what has happened with the excavations and where I’ve been visiting, maybe I’ll even get in a post or two about different topics that are running through my mind. Hope you keep reading (although if you don’t I know my mom will so 😛

About handyatmurlo

This journal has evolved from a blog about my archaeology days in Italy to my travels in the world with my wife. I am a Latin and Social Studies teacher at St. Columba School. I earned my MA at CU Boulder, my teaching certificate from Fort Lewis College and my BA at UMass Amherst. I have spent my summers working in Italy as an archaeologist at three different sites. One I have worked at for 10 years at Poggio Civitate at Vescovado di Murlo. I have worked at the Villa of Maxentius in Rome for 2 years, before the project ended. I also spent 2 summers at the FSU excavations in Cosa.
